Les Califes maudits est un cycle de cinq récits historiques qui reconstituent les règnes des quatre successeurs du Prophète Muhammad. Qualifiés de califes "bien guidés" par la tradition apologétique, ils n'ont cessé en réalité de s'entredéchirer, et ont tous connu une mort violente. Le premier volume, La Déchirure, publié au printemps dernier, nous faisait revivre comme une tragédie grecque la confrontation acharnée des prétendants au califat, et la malédiction proférée contre eux par Fatima, la fille du Prophète, dépossédée de son héritage.
Ce deuxième volume nous entraîne, après le coup d'Etat d'Abou Bakr, dans ce que l'on a appelé les "guerres d'apostasie" , la religion étant alors instrumentalisée dans les luttes meurtrières pour le pouvoir. C'est un baptême de sang que va connaître le Califat : les musulmans vont s'entretuer par milliers, dans une violence fondatrice dont les répliques se ressentent jusqu'à aujourd'hui...
